Athletic injuries in the United States: a Comprehensive Study

This Comprehensive study of Sports Injuries in the U.S. addresses all athletic injuries experienced by all individuals over the age of six (and not just a sample of high school or college athletes) including statistics on:

  • Youthful athletic injuries
  • Baby Boomer athletic injuries
  • Over 55 athletic injuries

The study was designed and executed by American Sports Data Inc. (ASD), the definitive source of sports and fitness participation data in the U.S. To enhance the analysis of athletic injuries, ASD has classified each injury according to the degree of "severity":

Level I: It did not interfere with subsequent participation

Level II: The injury prevented participation for less than a month on at least one or more future occasions

Level III: It prevented participation for at least a month

Level IV: The injury prevented participation for at least a month and resulted in emergency room treatment, overnight hospital stay, surgery or ongoing physical therapy

This study makes the direct link between sports participation behavior and injury experience and addresses all athletic injuries, including less serious incidents and mishaps not requiring emergency treatment.A unique aspect of this study is the direct numerator/denominator connection between sports participation behavior and injury experience. Statistics are presented both in aggregate form (i.e. total athletic injuries) and by individual sport/activity, including various (net) measurements. This consumer study is the first of its kind since the 1970's.To learn more about this athletic injuries study visit the Specialist in Sports and Fitness Research; to find out more about the general context of sports injuries, click on The SUPERSTUDY® of Sports Participation
